Corruption, conceit and lies have caught with the Sierra Leone People Party (SLPP) government of President Julius Maada Bio as the commercial banks reported no cash in the bank.
This situation put the people of the country in a very tight corner as many where unable to solve problems, this past December
The shortage of Leones, (Sierra Leone Currency) saw banks refusing to honour cheques in people’s account which indicated that the country is edging towards a serious economic meltdown, a financial expert who refused to be named told SALONE TIMES.
That business houses and ordinary people are now refusing to take their moneys to the Bank, compounding an already difficult situation.
Talking to a local radio station in December last year, Bank Governor Kelfala Kallon acquiesced that money is not in the Banks but assured the people that the money will come in the second week of January.
But in an interview with the BBC, the Bank Governor explained that they noticed the shortage of the country’s local currency in the Bank in July last year due to what he (Bank Governor) referred to as hoarding of the Leones.
That the Government will be investigating those who made huge withdrawals during this period.
Bank Governor Kallon explained that the money will be available in February, deferring the date he has already given to a local radio.
Although the Banks are insisting that there is no money in the vault, Governor Kallon maintained that there is enough money to run the state for next two years.
From all indications, it seems as if the Government doesn’t want to tell the people the exact financial problem in the country as cheques are still been rejected by the Bank.
Government owned audit reports have indicted the government of payroll irregularities, procurement mishaps and complete misuse of COVID Moneys.
