Following Wednesday 10 August violent protest leading to the death of Sierra Leoneans including Police Officers, Sierra Leone has become a subject of discussion in the international media and this time around for the wrong reasons
The report on CNN states that the government of Sierra Leone wants to use the recently passed cybersecurity crime act to crackdown on free speech but both the EU and UK who supported the government passing of the law have denied that they supported the law to crackdown on Free Speech.
According to the EU as quoted in the report, the spreading of incendiary information is not listed on the law of the crime while Amnesty International and Reporters Without Borders acquiesced to the fact that any repressive provision that is being used to control free speech on line must be repealed.
The report also featured David whose Friend Gibo was killed in the protest despite the fact that they were not part of the protest but were busy filming.
According to David, his friend was targeted because they were filming the protest and that the government didn’t want the foreign media to know about what actually happened.
The report states the authorities in Sierra Leone failed to respond to the issues that are being raised.
